The Program: AIDSUPPORT at JF&CS is designed as an outreach program
to provide the Jewish community with AIDS awareness, prevention education,
volunteer opportunities and support services. This program has made clear
strides by reaching out to all facets of our community with a caring and educated
response to the AIDS crisis infused with uniquely Jewish values and ideals.
Specific areas of focus include: creating awareness that Jews are infected and
affected; promoting the health and well-being of Jewish children, teens and
adults by providing them with age-appropriate HIV/AIDS education from a Jewish
viewpoint; providing volunteer opportunities (including recruitment, training
and supervision) for those who want to help; providing assistance to those who
need help; and creating a clear Jewish presence in the city-wide AIDS support
community.
L'Chaim!
The Program: L’Chaim!, a program of AIDSUPPORT at JF&CS, is a teen peer
education program staffed by a group of 8th grade teens who receive extensive
education in HIV/AIDS prevention, as well as issues related to drugs, alcohol
and pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, communication skills, cultural
diversity and more. In an age-appropriate manner, they take that information to
their peers and younger teens, using role-playing, games, improvisations and
values exercises to help them learn how to make safer, healthier and informed
choices about their behavior.
Proud 2001 Recipient of the Association of Jewish Family & Children’s Agencies
National Goodman Award for Innovative Programming
Who Does it Serve? In the last ten years, L’Chaim! teens have made
presentations to over 3,500 teens in Hebrew schools, camps, youth groups and
day schools.
