Volunteer of the Month: David Ziskind
Wondering how you can make an impact on someone’s life? Talk to David Ziskind. Or better yet, talk to 12-year-old Ethan Shulman. David is Ethan’s big pal, or, technically speaking, PAL. PAL, a program of JF&CS, is Atlanta’s Jewish Big Brother/Big Sister program that matches adult volunteers to children between the ages of 5 and 17 who need nurturing relationships in their lives. David first got involved with JF&CS through INTERACT, JF&CS’ young professional volunteer corps. David came to a ‘project night’ where a group of volunteers were stuffing toiletry bags for homeless individuals. He soon learned about the PAL program and was eager to get involved. David met Ethan around mid-2007, not long after he earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgia Tech and started his career as an electrical engineer. Having been involved with JF&CS’ Interact group, David had known about PAL and the opportunity it would give him “to make a difference in someone’s life.” When they met at a get-together for prospective PALs, it was an almost instant match. Click here to read more! A special thank you to JF&CS volunteer Sheri Panovka for writing this story! Volunteer OpportunitiesAdministrative Assistant: Motivated volunteers needed to help with office work such as filing, data entry, phone calls, mailings and more. Job is flexible to your schedule but a short term commitment is appreciated. Friendly Visitor: Develop a relationship with an elderly client by providing support, friendship and compassion. Visit at least twice a month and spend time one-on-one in the client's home or on fun outings. Renterpieces: Creativity is NOT required. On-the-job training provided! Help decorate our centerpiece baskets that are rented out for special occasions. Make new friends and chat about the latest books, movies, restaurants etc. as the group works on the centerpieces. The group meets on Wednesdays. JETS Drivers: Become a driver for older adults and adults with developmental disabilities in the community. Take them to and from doctor’s appointments or social visits and help them continue to live a fulfilling life. This is extremely flexible; you can drive once per month or as often as your schedule will allow.
