Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Stephen Bankston
The Ben Massell Dental Clinic (BMDC) and JF&CS proudly welcomed Dr. Stephen Bankston to the JF&CS Board of Directors this year. A volunteer at the clinic since April 2004, Dr. Bankston also sits on BMDC’s executive committee.
“Dr. (David) Zelby introduced me to the Clinic, and I have been committed ever since,” he says. “My motivation for this commitment is two-fold. The gratitude of the patients and the impact I see and feel from their response is truly inspiring. And this is my personal opportunity to give back to my community.”
A native of Southern Arkansas, Dr. Bankston received both his B.A. and D.D.M. at the University of Pennsylvania, where he played outside linebacker on the football team. He completed his internship and residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery pathology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Following a fellowship at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Dr. Bankston joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia as an assistant professor before being promoted to associate director of residency training. In September 2001, he joined Atlanta Oral & Facial Surgery. Dr. Bankston lives in Marietta with his wife Malena and their two daughters. He says his main hobby is community involvement.
His message to professional colleagues who have not had the privilege of this experience is simple: “Come visit the Ben Massell Dental Clinic. There are no barriers to serve. The clinical support staff and the equipment is the best you can find.”
We hope metro-area dentists who are not already volunteering at BMDC will consider doing so. All we ask for is one-half day per month. The rewards are endless! For more information, please contact Keith Kirshner, Director of BMDC, at 770-677-9461 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
