Happy New Year 2014: A Time for Renewal

Renew and Reflect This New Year

In contrast to the Jewish New Year we celebrate in the fall, the secular New Year can seem a bit anti-climactic. We might celebrate it by going out to a party or fancy dinner, and then spend the first day of the New Year sleeping and lazing around. And yet, as we ‘turn the page’ to a new calendar year, we are also habituated to the practice of New Year’s resolutions. Resolve to eat better, lose weight, and exercise more are among the common determinations people make at this time.

Shana Tova from JF&CS: Wishing you a Happy and Healthy 5772!

Wednesday night begins the celebration of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.  Members of our community will spend the next 2 days observing the holiday in a variety of ways.  Some will attend services at their synagogue, we may spend time with family and friends, perhaps enjoying a festive meal.  Many of us will take this opportunity to reflect on the past year and think ahead to the year to come.  We are pleased to share some remarks from Rabbi Peter Berg of The Temple (and a member of the JF&CS Board of Directors) and Rabbi Neil Sandler of Ahavath Achim Synagogue (and president of the Atlanta Rabbinical Association) which speak to the work we do to help support our community.
